Crafting your dream space: the benefits of partnering with a builder for home renovation projects

A recent character home renovation by Renovation Builders showcases a seamless integration of old and new.

Design it right

Before the building process begins, it’s crucial to get the design exactly right so that it fulfils all of the homeowners’ needs for the new space. Renovation Builders places a strong emphasis on the importance of the design process. They encourage clients to work with recommended designers with whom they have established long-standing relationships.

This collaborative approach ensures open communication between designers and builders throughout the entire build process.

The concept plans stage is a critical part of the design process, where clients can explore their ideas. This phase not only allows for creative exploration but also serves as a foundation for budgeting.

“We feel this is the most important stage of the whole build process,” shares Zane. “The concept plans are where you get to play around with the design and make changes and dream. It is also a critical part of the process – to make sure we are working within budgets. At this point, we will put together an estimate based on these drawings so you are able to keep a handle on the design-versus-budget.”

Another benefit to having an experienced builder on your team at this early stage is their knowledge of spaces, layout and functionality. Renovation Builders take pride in their spatial awareness, a quality that stems from having a previously qualified architect as their project manager. With a history of working on renovations since 1995, the team excels in understanding how spaces work. This expertise is especially critical when dealing with high-traffic areas like existing bathrooms and kitchens, ensuring that these spaces are not only functional but also feel spacious.

When it comes to home renovations it's important to consider the outdoor area. This pool and decking space built by Renovation Builders transformed the backyard of an older home.

Relationship building & communication

Building a home is not just about construction; it's about building relationships. Renovation Builders places great importance on strong communication and trust between the client and builder. They encourage clients to interview builders, check references, and even meet previous clients to ensure compatibility and ease of collaboration.

“Make sure you have a connection with your chosen builder. Building is firstly about relationships. It can be a long process with many challenges, and having a good relationship and communication are the two most important factors in any build,” says Zane.

“Interview your builder, do they tick your personal boxes? Ask yourself, if things got difficult or we came across a challenge could I work it through with this builder? Track record is everything. Ask for references from recent projects and do drive-bys. Even ask to meet previous clients to view their work. If you are not comfortable trust your instincts.”

Direct connections with trades & suppliers

One notable advantage of partnering with Renovation Builders is their direct connections with trades and suppliers. With proven track records and established relationships, their network ensures a swift and efficient process, avoiding unnecessary delays. This is particularly crucial when it comes to warranties or repairs, as builders with good credit ratings and long-standing relationships can expedite the resolution of issues.

“We offer great rates and direct connections with items like household appliances, carpet, tiles, plumbing and bathroom products, and a kitchen company. These items alone can save literally thousands.”

At the concept stage, a good builder can also help you save money by pointing out areas where the build is incurring extra costs and can make product or design suggestions to reduce costs.

Regular site meetings

Continuous communication is facilitated through regular site meetings between a good builder and their clients. These meetings allow for ongoing discussions, decision-making, and design changes as the build unfolds. The collaborative approach ensures that the final result aligns with the client's vision, even if on-site realities differ from the original plans.

“We constantly have site meetings with our customers as the build unfolds. It is at these meetings where we can narrow down decisions and design changes which will achieve the home the client is wanting,” says Zane. “What happens on-site can be distinctly different to how clients interpret plans. We will always build and design to the clients’ brief, and will always offer professional input and happily be a sounding board for our clients.”

Renovation Builders sees themselves not only as builders but as professionals with a keen understanding of the industry. With constant engagement in the design space and a commitment to staying informed about industry trends, the team ensures its clients benefit from the latest and most innovative solutions in the field.
